The Mala-i-Tolo curriculum at Busurata Secondary School has proven to be a tremendous success for the Form 4 students this academic year. Launched last year, this marks the second year of the program's implementation at the school.
Lesley Sanga, the Tolo teacher, emphasized the significance of the student's successful completion of the Mala-i-Tolo curriculum, describing it as a noteworthy achievement for all parties involved.
Mr. Sanga shared, "This year, our curriculum covered a wide array of topics, including Kwara’ae Language, culture, forest, medicinal plants, wild foods, and more."
The student-centred approach and immersive field visits integrated into the curriculum have greatly enriched the students' learning experience and facilitated their engagement with the subject matter.
Furthermore, the students researched Kwara’ae medicinal plants, focusing on remedies for common ailments like coughs, and explored topics such as Kwara’ae native vegetables, showcasing their deep involvement with the curriculum.
Alison Aramo, speaking on behalf of her peers, expressed gratitude for the curriculum's transformative impact, stating, "This educational initiative has been truly enriching for us. It has given us insights into our native languages, traditional practices, and cultural heritage."
Miss Aramo highlighted the distinctive nature of this educational approach, emphasizing its focus on Indigenous knowledge over conventional foreign history teachings and the program's ability to forge a connection between students and their heritage.
She further noted that students had the privilege of engaging with elders who shared invaluable wisdom on ancestral history predating the influence of Christianity.
"On behalf of the student body, I extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mala-i-Tolo for spearheading this initiative that has rekindled our ties to our cultural roots. We are indebted to the program's creators and the dedicated educators who have made this enriching experience possible," Miss Aramo concluded, acknowledging Lesley Sanga's exceptional commitment to imparting these critical lessons.
